Brian C. Vertz

Brian C. Vertz is one of Pittsburgh’s top family lawyers, with 25+ years of hands-on experience in handling complex and difficult family law cases, high net worth divorces, well-crafted prenup and settlement agreements, and complex child support disputes.  He represents a wide range of clients — including owners of professional practices and closely-held businesses — in family law settlements, prenuptial agreements, routine and high-conflict divorce litigation, settlement and appeals.  Mr. Vertz is a partner in Pollock Begg Komar Glasser & Vertz LLC, practicing in Western Pennsylvania for more than 25 years.  Brian is the co-author of the nation’s leading book on family law taxation, Frumkes & Vertz on Divorce Taxation, which he has expanded with new topics and the latest cases.

American Academy of Matrimonial LawyersIn 2003, after passing a rigorous examination and screening process, Mr. Vertz was elected to the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers, a national organization of family lawyers who are recognized by judges and attorneys as the nation’s premier family law practitioners with a high level of knowledge, skill and integrity.  Currently, he is serving as President-Elect of the Pennsylvania Chapter and Co-Chair of two national committees. He is active in the Chapter Leaders and other committees. He completed his training to become a certified matrimonial arbitrator in 2013. He is a lifetime member of the AAML Foundation.

In 2006, Mr. Vertz earned his designation as a Certified Valuation Analyst, denoting proficiency in business valuation.  Mr. Vertz also holds an MBA degree. Mr. Vertz was chosen as a featured speaker for the 2016 AICPA/AAML National Conference on Divorce, delivering two sessions: “Beyond a Reasonable Doubt: Determination of Owner-Employee Compensation” with Ronald L. Seigneur, and “Top 10: The Need-to-Know New Cases” with Michelle F. Gallagher.  He has also spoken for the national Annual Meeting of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers and its state chapters.

Mr. Vertz is a broadcast presenter and author for Family Law Update (2006 – 2016), one of the most-watched family law programs of the Pennsylvania Bar Institute (PBI). He contributes to many PBI publications each year, including Slicing the Pie: Equitable Distribution in Pennsylvania (2010-2016), Tax Consequences in Divorce (2005, 2012), Drafting Marital Settlement Agreements (2008, 2014), and Family Law 101 (formerly Fundamentals of Family Law) (1994 – 2014).  Mr. Vertz has been writing and publishing articles and books for more than 20 years.

Mr. Vertz was educated at the University of Michigan (BA 1988), the University of Pittsburgh School of Law (JD 1992), and the Joseph M. Katz Graduate School of Business (MBA 1991).

Honors and Accolades

Since 2005, Mr. Vertz has been recognized by his lawyers in the community as one of Pennsylvania’s Super Lawyers for family law. Mr. Vertz is currently listed as one of the Top 50 Super Lawyers for Pittsburgh. He has been listed in Super Lawyers every year since 2005.  All of his law partners are also listed in Super Lawyers, and the firm has been ranked by U.S. News & World Reports as one of the Tier One Top Ranked Firms for family law in the state.

Alyssa Sweeney

Alyssa Sweeney is a third year law student at the University of Pittsburgh School of Law.  She has been a clerk with Pollock Begg Komar Glasser & Vertz since May 2015.  Alyssa is also a Certified Legal Intern in the University of Pittsburgh Family Law Clinic.

Melvyn B. Frumkes

As a Fellow of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers, Melvyn B. Frumkes was an authority on divorce taxation and legal strategy. Mr. Frumkes wrote the first edition of Divorce Taxation and every annual update through 2013.

Prior to his death of natural causes in 2014, Mr. Frumkes practiced law in Miami Dade County, Florida, where he was Board Certified in Marital and Family Law. Mr. Frumkes was a past President of the Florida Chapter of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers and past Chairman of the Family Law Section of The Florida Bar. He was a Diplomate of the American College of Family Trial Lawyers and a Fellow of the International Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers. He was listed in the Best Lawyers in America since its inception in 1983.

Mr. Frumkes was the author of this much-loved treatise for nearly thirty years, having first developed the materials with Cynthia L. Greene, Esq., for the Graduate Tax LLM program at the University of Miami School of Law in the mid-1980’s. He was on the faculty of the National Judicial College in Reno, Nevada for 18 years where he taught Divorce Taxation. He was on the Board of Editors of the Journal of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers, and the Family Advocate (ABA, Family Law Section) and was a Contributing Editor to Fair$hare. His contributions to the study and practice of family law, both in Florida and throughout the United States, are inestimable.
