Brian C. Vertz has been recognized locally, statewide and nationally for his skill and experience. Brian is deeply committed to improving family law practice through his affiliation with the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers (AAML). He was elected as a Fellow in 2003. Election to the AAML is one of the highest honors in the field of family law, reserved for those who are recognized by judges and attorneys as preeminent family law practitioners with a high level of knowledge, skill and integrity.
At the national level, Brian is Co-Chair of the AAML Amicus Committee, responsible for submitting “friend of the court” briefs, including a brief to the U.S. Supreme Court in a case involving children’s rights. He is Co-Chair of the AAML Practice & Technology Committee. Brian was a planner and speaker for the AAML/AICPA National Conference on Divorce in 2014 and 2016. He is also President-Elect of the Pennsylvania state chapter.
Brian has become deeply involved in the AAML Foundation, the charitable wing of the Academy. As a lifetime member, Brian is committed to promoting community organizations that assist children in need. Brian was the organizer of the 2016 Joanne Ross Wilder Memorial Lecture, on the topic of implicit bias in family law. Brian is also a member of the Fundraising Committee.
Brian C. Vertz is active in the legal community in Pittsburgh and across Pennsylvania. He was elected to the Pennsylvania Bar Association’s Family Law Section Council, which helps to shape family law regulations, in 2017. He is also a member of the PBA Family Law Section’s Executive Committee. He has lectured twice before the Pennsylvania Conference of State Trial Judges.
Brian has served on committees for the Allegheny County Bar Association. He was the founder of the Legally Speaking Toastmasters chapter. He was an officer and trustee of the Crafton Public Library. He supports pro bono and charitable causes through the Allegheny Bar Foundation and Pittsburgh Pro Bono Partnership.
Brian is a prolific writer and speaker. For more than a decade, he has presented the annual Family Law Updates, one of the most-watched family law programs of the Pennsylvania Bar Institute (PBI). Brian is also an author of Slicing Up the Pie: Equitable Distribution in Pennsylvania; Business Valuation and Divorce; Tax Consequences and Estate Issues in Divorce and Drafting Marital Settlement Agreements, as well as twenty editions of Fundamentals of Family Law.
